Overview
The Direction Control versions of the PIRAMID are derived from PROTECH’s standard models SDI-76XL and SDI-77XL. Except for having Direction Control capability, the Direction Control versions of PIRAMID are virtually identical to the standard models of PIRAMID in regard to specifications, features and performance characteristics. PIRAMID XL-DIR offers a field adjustable switch to detect a target based on the direction of movement.
Dual-technology volumetric sensors (PIRAMID) integrate a proprietary microwave design using stereo Doppler along with passive infrared technology. The microwave technology detects the motion of the intruder, and the infrared detects a change in IR radiation as the intruder moves through the field of detection. The combination of these two technologies provides a reliable and powerful solution.
PIRAMID XL is a dual technology volumetric intrusion sensor which integrates a proprietary Stereo Doppler microwave design and passive infrared. These two complementary technologies must be activated simultaneously to generate an intrusion alarm.
PIRAMID sensors offer highly reliable volumetric protection over a wide variety of extreme environmental conditions. Advanced signal processing for each of the two technologies provides immunity to randomly moving targets such as vibration, moving vegetation and temperature variations. Special filtering enables exceptional immunity to birds and small animals.
The PIRAMID XL Direction control offers four models
- Dual technology with directional control
- Stereo Doppler with directional control
- Stereo doppler vehicle detector with directional control
- Dual technology Ladder and tower protection with direction control
The PIRAMID XL-DIR sensors have a very broad application range. For optimum performance it is best to use the PIRAMID XL-DIR to monitor one-way traffic. The Direction Control Versions of the PIRAMID XL offer a field adjustable switch to detect a target based on the direction of movement. A three-position switch to detect approaching targets, receding targets, or both approaching and receding targets. The sensor can be used to detect oncoming pedestrian or vehicle traffic or wrong way traffic sensors.
The “DIR” Version of PIRAMID is an outdoor dual technology sensor specifically designed to detect pedestrians and intruders rather than vehicles. The “DIR” Version combines Stereo Doppler Microwave and Passive Infrared technologies. The independent technologies are “And Gated” and must activate simultaneously to create an overall sensor alarm. The “DIR” comes in an assortment of protection patterns. The maximum speed is 20 mph for pedestrian’s traffic.
The “MW-VD” Version of PIRAMID is an outdoor single technology Stereo Doppler Microwave
sensor specifically designed to detect vehicles. The MW-VD Vehicular Detector comes in
both a wide and narrow protection pattern and will detect vehicles (cars) at distances of
approximately 100 ft. at 40 mph.
The “MW-DIR” version of PIRAMID is an outdoor single technology Stereo Doppler Microwave
sensor specifically designed to detect pedestrians and intruders. The MW-DIR comes in both
a wide angle (50 ft. x 50 ft.) and narrow angle (100 ft. x 60 ft.) protection pattern coverage.

Must be installed on a wall or solid pole. If installed on a building with a metal surface, support must be vibration resistant.
Not recommended for installation on surfaces exposed to strong vibrations.
Position detector so coverage stops on the ground in the target protection area. NOTE: the device can detect a large object (car/bus) at a distance of- 150 meters (492 feet).
Do not install the detector under eaves without a gutter. Heavy water flow- in front of the detector can trigger unwanted alarms.
PIRAMID XL2 is a dual technology volumetric intrusion sensor which integrates a proprietary Stereo Doppler microwave design and passive infrared. These two complementary technologies must be activated simultaneously to generate an intrusion alarm.
Dual-technology volumetric sensors (PIRAMID) integrate a proprietary microwave design using stereo Doppler along with passive infrared technology. The microwave technology detects the motion of the intruder and which direction they are moving, and the infrared detects a change in IR radiation as the intruder moves through the field of detection. The combination of these two technologies provides a reliable and powerful solution.
PIRAMID sensors offer highly reliable volumetric protection over a wide variety of extreme environmental conditions. - Direction Control Switch: A three position switch to detect approaching targets, receding targets, or both approaching and receding targets.
- Stereo Doppler Microwave Sensor: Two receiving channels with the ability to eliminate vibration and periodically moving objects as sources of false alarms.
- Dual Element Infrared Sensor: Ignores normal temperature variations yet is very responsive to rapid movement by an intruder.
- Microprocessor controlled: Proprietary integrated circuit design provides enhanced digital signal processing for both microwave and passive infrared technologies.
- Balanced Temperature Compensation: Stereo Doppler Microwave and Passive Infrared portions automatically adjust detection parameters to compensate for losses in range that occur at elevated temperatures.
- Stereo Doppler Supervision: A component failure will cause the sensor to lock -in alarm.
- Digital Range Control: Ten-position digital switch adjusts how far the sensor detects (to its maximum range).
- Digital Sensitivity Control: Ten-position digital switch adjusts the amount of movement required to initiate an alarm condition.
- Master Alarm LEDs: Displayed on the face of the unit indicating the alarm relay status.
- Analytic LEDs: Alarm and environmental caution LEDs for both technologies are displayed on the face of the sensor. An internal switch can disable both Master and Analytic LEDs.
- Walk-Test Minisounder: Audible tester to assist in walk-test and initial sensor set-up. The walk test XL-minisounder greatly simplifies the installation as it enables walk-testing and adjustment by a single installer.
- Swivel Mounting: 180 degree Horizontal Adjustment 90 degree Vertical Adjustment.
- Tamper Proof: Tamper switch with terminal connection.
- All Solid State Relay: User selectable form C relay output. A solid state relay is flexible, silent and more reliable than an electromechanical relay.
